(May 17, 2013) -- Later today (May 17th), the first ever Long Beach Dyke March will feature LGBTQ civil rights pioneer Robin Tyler as the featured speaker. Ms. Tyler with her then-partner (later wife) Diane Olson, were the first two same-sex couples married in Los Angeles after their lawsuit Tyler et al vs. County of Los Angeles prevailed in the California Supreme Court in May 2008. Six months later, Proposition 8 was passed by California voters ending the short lived window for same-sex marriages in the state. Proposition 8 is now before the U.S. Supreme Court with a decision expected on that case by July.
In an exclusive audio interview with LBREPORT.com, Ms. Tyler discusses numerous aspects of her 40 year career as a civil rights pioneer. From her pioneering days as the first out lesbian comic on television, to her work in helping organize the four Gay and Lesbian protest marches on Washington D.C., Tyler discusses her work with some of the most famous gay rights advocates and leaders in the history of the gay civil rights movement as well as the case that resulted in her ultimate marriage of her 20 year partner and her views on the U.S. Supreme Court Proposition 8 case. Tyler's life story is nothing less than a window into the most significant civil rights struggles of our time. LBREPORT.com will webcast tonight's "Dyke March" LIVE on our front page -- www.LBREPORT.com -- starting at about 6:30 p.m., making the Long Beach event accessible citywide, statewide and beyond.
