Countdown Clocks

(Mar. 21, 2014, 11:45 a.m.) -- Below are Belmont Shore/2nd St. vicinity crimes reported by LBPD during the period between Feb. 1 and March 16, 2014.

The Belmont Shore Residents Association recently asked candidates in the race to succeed Council incumbent Gary DeLong what specific policies they'd take to benefit Belmont Shore residents; how they'd address residents' concerns about quality of life and property values due to late night disturbances from bar and restaurant patrons; and how they'd improve parking...and if they'd vote to tear down a home at 205 La Verne for a parking lot

To HEAR the candidates' responses (on-demand audio), see LBREPORT.com coverage at this link.

LBREPORT.com also invited LBPD Commander Paul LeBaron to provide perspective and context regarding the crimes listed below; his comments follow the reported crime text below.

LBREPORT.com asked LBPD East Division Commander Paul LeBaron if the incidents above reflect an increase in these crimes. We also asked what a bar fight requires in terms of LBPD resources.

[Commander LeBaron Mar. 17 email reply]...In regards to the assaults and other crimes, there [are no] crime trends at this time that show increases in the Belmont Shore area. In East Division as a whole the only crime that is trending upward, but still down from last year is auto thefts...

You inquired specifically about the assaults, and I ask that you keep in mind that assaults are not crimes that are easy to prevent or predict as many of them involve people in bars or private residences. Our primary focus for prevention of assaults is the partnership and education with the bar owners, as well as the high visibility on 2nd Street when the crowds are most prevalent.

As for resources used at a bar fight, there is no easy answer to that question. It will always depend on the number of people involved in the fight, the seriousness of the altercation and the connection to any other criminal activity.

Obviously we try to intervene on crimes in progress as quickly as possible to avoid an escalation of an incident. But keep in mind that an assault can be anything from someone bumping into a person in an aggressive manner to punches begin thrown, to a fight between a brother and sister inside their house (as one of the reported assaults was in February).

The primary factor that brings it to our level is when someone wants to [report him or herself as] a victim and a report is taken. As a result the total number of assaults reported is not always reflective of actual number of assaults that occur, and trends are often times misleading.
