( June 4, 2014, 8:40 a.m.) -- Long Beach Councilman Steven Neal, who in 2010 won NLB's 9th district seat with heavy support from organized labor, won't be heading to Sacramento as an Assemblymember representing the Carson-NLB 64th Assembly district.
Councilman Neal finished third in an election in which only the top two finishers advance. With all precincts reporting, Carson Councilman Mike Gipson finished first with 51.1% of the vote and will proceed to a November runoff with Prophet La'Omar Walker, who received 21.4% of the vote. Councilman Neal received 15% of the vote, with Micah Ali at 12.4%. (All are Dems.) Councilman Neal will be exiting the LB City Council in mid-July, succeeded by his Chief of Staff, Councilman-elect Rex Richardson. Another Sacramento Assembly hopeful, LB Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal (Dem) likewise finished out of the money, ending up third in a LB Assembly race to Councilman Patrick O'Donnell (Dem) and businessman John Goya (Repub), who proceed to a November runoff. blog comments powered by Disqus
