11:10 a.m. FLASH: Garcia responds with mass emailing after Lowenthal Mayoral mailer reprints LBRegister story [paper's headline] "Robert Garcia's job claims don't quite add up...took credit on city projects, inflated employment claims." Garcia mass email says: "[M]y opponents have resorted to negative Sacramento style campaign attacks. They want to distort our record of balancing the budget, creating jobs, and reforming our public pensions. These last minute attacks are the sign of desperate campaigns."
6:30 a.m. FLASH: LBREPORT.com learns "hit piece" mailer blasting 5th dist. Council candidate Carl Kemp was funded by a Sac'to-HQ'd group (previously focused mainly on Repub/conservative issues) using funds for mailer from (among others) ELB company whose president is Councilman Gary DeLong. Same ELB company headed by DeLong was among initial contributors to a separate independent expenditure committee backing Garcia for Mayor about which Mayor Foster has said "you don't see my name on it." Other mailer contributors include Aeroplex Aviation [firm headed by Curt Castagna.] Foster and Kemp had pointed Council exchange when Kemp's advocacy firm's clients previously included Long Beach Collective Ass'n (a number of medical marijuana outlets.) Kemp and Foster also clashed on other matters: Kemp rep'd Legacy Partners (wanted Harbor HQ in World Trade Center) and Kemp opposed removing Harbor Comm'n Pres. Tom Fields.
6:30 a.m. FLASH: 3rd dist. Council candidate Rosenberg tweets DeLong "supports" him and tweets pic of DeLong attending Rosenberg event BUT DeLong emails LBREPORT.com policy-supportive explanation that stops short of using word "support" or "endorse." Mayor Foster has endorsed Price. First Lady Nancy Foster has endorsed Lewis.
FLASH 6:30 a.m. UPDATED 2:13 p.m.: Former Vice Mayor Lerch told LBREPORT.com that he spotted an individual last night (April 7) putting up signs supporting an LBCC Trustee candidate in vicinity Cherry/South. Lerch says he took the signs down [put them the ground], angering the person who placed them who then called police; Lerch says he waited for police to arrive, was detained and questioned by police, then told him he could go home. [UPDATE] LBPD PIO Marlene Arrona tells LBREPORT.com that approx. 10:09 p.m. April 7, officers were dispatched to the area of South St/Downey Avenue re a possible theft; arriving officers contacted the calling party who advised he observed a man appeared to be removing various campaign signs from yards; the caller provided officers with a possible vehicle license plate; officers located a vehicle matching the description and interviewed the driver; a theft report was filed & investigation is ongoing.
