Billie had many careers, first as an Army nurse, serving in Korea; then as a kindergarten teacher in Long Beach; then as a bird rescuer, nursing many injured birds back to health and release.

In 1995, Billie was one of the organizers of Save the Park and helped raise thousands of dollars for the successful law suit which kept a commercial sports center out of El Dorado Park.

She was an articulate advocate at Long Beach City Council and the California Coastal Commission for trying to save the Roosevelt Naval Base.

Because of all the injuries to birds she treated from fishing lines and hooks, she helped convince the Parks and Recreation Department to put signs at the fishing lake in El Dorado, urging fishermen to stay away from the reeds and remove their deadly equipment.

People from all over this area brought injured birds to her and she devoted her life to healing and releasing them. Especially in spring, she worked around the clock feeding orphaned baby birds. Billie knew about every type of bird, from hummingbirds to crows to hawks. She was especially fond of owls and rehabbed many, including Barn and Great Horned Owls. In 1980, Billie wrote "A Manual for the Care of Wild Birds", giving instructions on what to do if finding an injured bird. When she could no longer care for sick birds, Billie enjoyed feeding them in her back yard, which was full of Goldfinches, Doves and Bluebirds much of the year.

Billie loved all animals (except cats, because of the many birds they kill), but dogs were 'the love of her life'. She had a number of dog companions, the last being Chang, who died last month. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Luther and daughter, Kim; and is survived by her son Lee, his wife, Mercedes and granddaughter, Genesis.

Services to be announced soon.
