(November 2, 2017, 9:05 p.m.) -- Such devastating news about the passing of one of the gentlest, kindest, most honest "politicos" I've had the very genuine pleasure of meeting in my short political journey.

From Lions Club, Kiwanis, the Democratic Party, and through every Long Beach community, Jerry Caligiuri was an incredible man who truly lived a selfless life of service. He was one of those people who didn't mind, no ENJOYED, being behind the scenes working hard helping people and causes he believed would make a difference. I consider myself very, very lucky to have earned his friendship and support.

He was an early, invaluable advisor in my campaign and I remember the comfort I felt at various events on the trail knowing he was there. We first met many years ago when I was writing a story for a local newspaper about an issue in my neighborhood. He was working for the city at the time and I randomly reached him looking for someone to interview. His instant knowledge of the subject at hand impressed me, but it was his patience that really had a lasting impact. He CARED.

I was thrilled to reconnect with him years later. He was very special; always keeping his word, always following up, and he even knew my kids by name. His emails and texts were always welcome, interesting, and often humorous. He was polite even when he was talking smack.

The last message I received from him was an invitation to this past Sunday's annual LACDP dinner at which he was awarded the prestigious "Democrat of the Year" honor for our district. Deservedly so.

I will miss my friend. Godspeed, Jerry. Long Beach lost a real good one.
