Mayor Garcia's words published below weren't submitted to LBREPORT.com by him. They were publicly stated by him during the July 24, 2018 Long Beach City Council meeting. The summarizing title of this opinion piece contains our words, not his. The Council was discussing an agenda item (brought by four Councilmembers, coverage here) that sought city management options for a "dedicated local revenue source" to fund "affordable" (subsidized/low income) housing and homeless-related services.

Mayor Garcia: "I've heard from a couple of people that the City shouldn't, not tonight but those that have called me, that the City shouldn't tax folks. As a reminder, the City doesn't, we don't tax anybody.

"The taxes that pass the City are voted on by the voters, and so this Council doesn't go and increase someone's tax or do a parcel tax. That is only decided by voters in the city..."
