(April 13, 2014) -- You can tell a lot about a person based on what they consider important or unimportant. The recently concluded April 8 elections showed what some people in town consider important and unimportant, in other words, their values.
Some say values don't matter in elections. We believe the opposite is true. We believe that in elections, values are the most important thing voters should consider. In the recently concluded April 8 election, some candidates and those supporting them said things about factual matters that were untrue or misleading. In private industry, if a job candidate told an interviewer things that were untrue or misleading, that job seeker wouldn't be hired. In seeking election, if a job candidate says things that are untrue or misleading, they shouldn't expect to gain votes but to lose them. LBREPORT.com doesn't endorse candidates. We report news, often in detail, sometimes including "Amnesia File" and "Fact Check" coverage and perspective, and we leave applying the facts to our readers. We acknowledge that people can reasonably draw different conclusions based on the same facts. However, we are fond of the principle articulated by the late scholar and statesman, former U.N. Ambassador and U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D, NY) who famously said: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts. In our opinion, those who applaud or endorse candidates who rely on falsehoods and misleading statements to gain public office are basically enablers. We have less respect for them than for the candidates whose falsehoods they are enabling. LBREPORT.com is now in our 14th year. We've reported things that others can't or don't or won't and offered opinions that others wouldn't. Over the years, we've said things that have irritated virtually everyone who's held public office at some point or other. Regardless of what follows in this election cycle, we won't change our independent coverage or adjust our values in response.
