(April 27, 2004) -- A grassroots shrine has appeared at the intersection of Lakewood Blvd. at Arbor Rd., the site of an April 14 hit and run action that killed Garrett Mathieu, 18, of Lakewood.
A row of candles with a cross lines the west side of Lakewood Blvd. at Arbor Rd. Traffic control boxes display heartfelt messages memorializing the deceased.
LBPD said in an April 15 written release that Mr. Mathieu was standing at the corner when he attempted to cross Lakewood Blvd. and ran across Lakewood Blvd. against a red signal. He was allegedly struck by a northbound vehicle traveling through the intersection with a green light.
LBPD says that after striking Mr. Mathieu, the vehicle allegedly continued northbound on Lakewood Blvd. without making an attempt to stop and check the well-being of the victim, and the vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on Del Amo Blvd.
Police say the suspect vehicle is a light colored Lexus RX 300 (an SUV) and is believed to have been driven by a female Caucasian in her mid-twenties.
The suspect is at large as we post.
