Colonna Uses Nat'l League of Cities Post To Bring City Leaders to LB This Summer

(April 9, 2005) -- Using a national level post to which he was appointed in January, 3d district Councilman Frank Colonna is bringing the leaders of some of America's largest cities to LB this summer.

As previously reported by LBReport.com, Councilman Colonna was named in January to chair the National League of Cities' "Central Cities Council," comprised of some of America's largest cities. The Central Cities Council (members listed below) is now scheduled to meet in LB from July 8-10.

"I look forward to hosting some our nation’s best and brightest city leaders, said Councilman Colonna in a written release. "This meeting will give the Central Cities Council a chance to address some of the major issues facing our cities, as well as give me the opportunity to showcase Long Beach’s successes and the unique flavor of our international city."

The release said that this year, the Central Cities Council "is focusing on transportation, community development programs and homeland security."

The National League of Cities is a non-governmental organization representing the interests of cities (i.e. City Halls)...about 18,000 nationwide. The National League of Cities' web site describes the Central Cities Council including the nation's largest cities. Chairing the Central Cities Council puts Councilman Colonna among the National League of Cities leadership...and presumably in a position to influence the group's policies.

The Central Cities Council Membership includes:

Chair, Frank Colonna, Council Member, City of Long Beach , California

    Committee Vice Chairs:
Susan Burgess, Council Member, City of Charlotte, North Carolina
Jim Naugle, Mayor, City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Roosevelt Coats, Council Member, City of Cleveland, Ohio

Dick Traini, Assembly Chairman, City-County of Anchorage, Alaska
Dick Tremaine, Assembly Member, City-County of Anchorage, Alaska
Dennis P. Zine, Council Member, City of Los Angeles, California
Nancy J. Nadel, Council Member, City of Oakland, California
Doug Linkhart, Council Member, City of Denver, Colorado
John Lasita, Council Member, City of St. Petersburg, Florida
Felicia A. Moore, Council Member, City of Atlanta, Georgia Jim Maddox, Council Member, City of Atlanta, Georgia George A. Brown, Jr., Council Member, City of Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky
John A. Batt, Jr. , Council Member, City of New Orleans, Louisiana
Oliver M. Thomas, Vice President, City of New Orleans, Louisiana
Paul J. Scapicchio, Council Member, City of Boston, Massachusetts
Charles Lyons, Superintendent-Director, Shawsheen Valley Technical, Massachusetts

Larry McAtee, Council Member, City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Willa Johnson, Council Member, City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Ed Oakley, Council Member, City of Dallas, Texas
Gordon Quan, Council Member, City of Houston, Texas
Nicholas J. Licata, Council Member, City of Seattle, Washington

A release from Councilman Colonna's office says the conference is being organized by the National League of Cities, the City of Long Beach, and the LB Convention and Visitors Bureau.
