News City Auditor, LB Police & Firefighters In TV Ad Blitz For Prop H (Fee Increase On LB Oil Producers, Revenue For Public Safety)
(April 6, 2007) -- A series of TV ads has been launched in support of Prop H, the May 1 ballot measure that would increase the fee charged LB oil producers to generate revenue specifically for public safety purposes (details below).
The ads are paid for by "Put Public Safety First, Yes on Prop H, Major Funding by the Long Beach Police Officers Assoc, Independent Expenditure Committee." Filings listing sums raised and spent are pending.
We spotted the ads rotating during Charter Cable cutaways for local ads on the Fox News Channel. [We presume they're on other similar content channels too, probably including CNN and others].
One features LB City Auditor Laura Doud; a second is voiced by a LB Firefighters Union VP; a third features a LB Policewoman [our videorecorder jammed and we missed her name, title & pix; we'll add them here on subsequent rotations.]
Here's the content:
City Auditor Doud: As City Auditor, my job is to watch out for taxpayers and ensure Long Beach receives its fair share of revenue. Voting Yes on Prop H raises the fee that oil producers -- not residents -- pay our city, an amount similar to whatthey already pay other cities. Prop H creates nearly $4 million in new revenue to fund police and fire protection. | Screen save, viewed on Charter Cable |

Another ad opens with LB Firefighters VP Mike Duree on camera and continues with his voice over this slide. | Screen save, viewed on Charter Cable |

By its terms, Prop H revenue "may only be used for police officers and firefighters, and related costs including, but not limited to, equipment facilties and training, all intended to ensure responses to public safety needs, natural and man-made disasters and possible acts of terrorism."
Prop H requires a 2/3 vote for passage (dedicated tax, special election).
The other May 1 ballot measures (Props A-G) are proposed Charter Amendments and need only a majority vote.
