Did you know you'll probably blow at least $68,982 dollars to power your home for the next 25 years. GO SOLAR With Ameco Solar, a SunPower Premier Dealer who’s been Solarizing Long Beach Since 1974 - WHO ELSE CAN SAY THAT?! GO SOLAR, SEE DONTBLOWYOURCASH.COM
(April 8, 2012) -- Mike Jensen (at right in photo below alongside fellow LB Rotarian Brian Russell) spent the day before this Easter Sunday (a day it wasn't certain Mr. Jensen would see one year earlier) honoring the memory of Mark Bixby, who perished with four others in a March 2011 plane crash at LB Airport.

Mr. Jensen was the sole survivor, and was present on April 7, 2012 as multiple LB Rotarians, including LB Rotary President Blake Christian, held the 1st annual Mark Bixby Easter Egg Hunt along the former Pacific Electric "Red Car" right of way at PCH/Junipero now known as Rotary Centennial Park.

Event Chair was Rotarian Lance Kenyan, who joined LB Rotary a year ago and took the lead on the event.

On Facebook, Mr. Russell (VP at Coldwell Banker Commercial/Blair Westmac and Ass't to LB Rotary's President) captioned the photo as follows: "Rotarian Mike Jensen. I can't think of a better person to stand next to at the 1st Annual Mark Bixby Easter Egg Hunt." LBReport.com asked permission from Messrs. Russell and Jensen to include the photo in connection this story and they graciously agreed. All photos on this page are credited to Mr. Russell, who wrote on Facebook prior to the event:

We are honoring the memory of a Past President of Long Beach Rotary Mark Bixby who under his year of leadership; the Rotary Centennial Park was developed from a old weed chocked stretch of Red Car Right of Way to a green, landscaped beautiful park with educational themes, park benches, a BBQ for this inner city location AND providing some Easter fun for the neighborhood kids. One of the best parts? Witnessing the generosity of our community partners and Rotarians come together for this event.

LB Rotary President Blake Christian delivered remarks...

...as did 4th dist. Councilman Patrick O'Donnell.

LB City Hall's website says:

[City website text] Rotary Centennial Park, a new Mini Park is located on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Junipero Street. The park was first constructed when the Rotary Club approached the department with the idea of collaborating on the construction of the new park in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Rotary International in 2005.

...The mini park is a joint project of the Rotary Club of Long Beach and the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine.

The park features a solar system theme that contains art installations of the planets, benches, turf, trees, playground equipment, a half-court basketball court, gazebo and a water play spray feature.

The Rotary Club of Long Beach partnered with the City to develop this park in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Rotary. On May 15, 2003, the Parks and Recreation Commission approved to recommend to the City Council that the park be named "Rotary Centennial Park." In addition to a sizable donation for the parks capital development, the Rotary Club donated and installed artwork in the form of a scale model of the solar system, and has done many clean-ups of the park by club members.

The site is a long linear park cutting diagonally through the block. A walkway and bicycle trail runs through the park on the diagonal. Other improvements include a playground and a large picnic shelter. Besides the Rotary Club, funding came from Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1996, Park Impact Fees and the state Parks Bond Act of 2000. The park was opened in June 2005.
