(April 3, 2015) -- LBREPORT.com reports below salient campaign contributions in the 4th Council district no runoff special election (vote by mail ballots circulating now with April 14 election day.)

Three years ago, 4th district Council candidate Daryl Supernaw finished first in April 2012 with a grassroots, ran a small campaign and was outpolled and outspent in a June runoff by Council incumbent Patrick O'Donnell, who was supported by big spending by three big labor (including three union-backed independent expenditure committees.). Three years later, Mr. Supernaw is vying primarily with Herlinda Chico, who is supported by big spending by big labor...but this time Mr. Supernaw has collected sizable contributions to his own campaign -- and two weeks before the election reported nearly the same amount of cash in hand as Mr. Chico.

In addition, one independent expenditure committee has surfaced and has collected and spent a sizable sum to date supporting Mr. Supernaw.

As of the end of March, Mr. Supernaw's campaign reported $19,473 cash in hand. Ms. Chico's campaign reported 22,451 cash in hand...with $17,844 in unpaid bills.

Three union-backed independent expenditure committees (L.A. County AFL-CIO, LB police union, LB firefighter union) are spending sizable sums to elect Ms. Chico. An independent expenditure committee (backed mainly by the CA Association of Realtors PAC plus other business interests) is supporting the election of Mr. Supernaw. All figures below are through the end of March 2015.

Independent Expenditure Committees supporting election of Herlinda Chico

Long Beach Police Officers Ass'nCumulated printing, postage, mailing: $14,800
Long Beach Firefighters Ass'nCumulated printing, postage, mailing: $6,983
LA County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO Council on Political Education [figures at right appear to be cumulated sums]3/28 "Literature" $13,150
    3/29 "Field Program" $23,150

[Note: In a posting on Facebook, one 4th district resident writes: "Maybe it's just me, but the more I thought about it: I think it's a bit scary that a person identifying himself as being a representative of the AFL-CIO came knocking on my door telling me who to vote for in the 4th district election...and he told me he'll be back. I'm clearly displaying a sign as to who I support-- so I find this tactic more than a bit intimidating."]
