Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) Manager Ted Stevens has said that coyotes can run at up to 40 mph and are quite intelligent. They learn from human behavior and shouldn't be allowed to become comfortable around people. He said people can make them feel unwelcome by throwing things, squirting them with a water hose when available or a super-soaker bottle filled with ammonia or vinegar. "If hazed enough they won't want to come around," Mr. Stevens said.
