(April 3, 2015) -- A tradition was (quite possibly) born today (April 3) as new type of auto race -- featuring "Formula E" all-electric race cars -- drew thousands to see the battery-powered vehicles race along the city's Grand Prix race course. Meanwhile, ELB's "Solar Grand Prix" -- which challenged teams of teenage students to design and build model-sized cars powered by donated solar cells that "raced" along a wooden track built by donated union labor in El Dorado Park -- was effectively allowed to vanish. The office of Councilwoman Stacy Mungo (who took office in July 2014) invited event supporters to take over much of organizational work, which apparently didn't happen. A message on the City's 5t district webpage stated: Dear Neighbor, The annual Long Beach Solar Grand Prix competition is a truly remarkable event that takes significant time, resources and planning to successfully execute. In the past, this effort was led by at least two or three staff members over the course of several months. The event had been organized annually since 2010 by the office of now-former 5th dist.
