(April 9, 2016) -- A man (adult) was shot/wounded at midafternoon Saturday (April 9) a block west of Atlantic Ave. and two blocks south of South St. in the 8th Council district. The crime scene is roughly three blocks south and one block west of the soon-to-be-completed Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library.
LBPD Watch Commander Lt. Mark Coble tells LBREPORT.com (preliminary information) that at about 1:50 p.m. on April 9, a man (adult) was struck by gunfire in the area of Linden Ave./Norton St.; the victim suffered what are believed to be Exactly one week earlier on April 2, gunfire occurred roughly two blocks south in the area of Linden Ave./South St.; no persons/property were reported hit on that date (border of 8th/9th Council districts.) The Linden/Norton shooing is the second of the day in NLB; about nine hours earlier at roughly 5 a.m. April 9, a man was shot/wounded in the Coolidge Triangle area (west of L.A. River/9th district.) On Sept 15 and 22, 2015 the Council voted (without dissent) to adopt a FY16 budget, recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia, that failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit. It leaves LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what L.A. would have if L.A.'s Mayor and Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers.
In August 2012, Mayor Foster first recommended the budgeted elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit. The Council balked, funded the unit at half strength for a year, but in subsequent years quietly let it disappear. Then-Vice Mayor Garcia (chosen by Foster to chair the Council's Public Safety Committee in mid-2010) held no hearings on Foster's proposal or any public safety impacts of Foster's budget recommendations. Councilwoman Suzie Price, whom Mayor Garcia named to chair the Public Safety Committee in 2014, has followed that practice regarding Garcia's budget recommendations.
