(April 13, 2016. 9:58 am.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that 422 ballots remain to be counted in the razor-thin 8th Council district race, in which incumbent Al Austin currently leads by eight votes over the combined total of his two ballot challengers.
The City Clerk's office tells LBREPORT.com that 196 vote-by-mail ballots and 226 provisional ballots remain to be counted. [Final ballots historically include vote by mail ballots received by the City Clerk in the closing days of the election cycle, plus vote by mail ballots turned in at precinct polling places, plus provisional ballots that the City Clerk's office must review before counting.] Austin currently has 50.1183% of the vote without counting those 422 ballots; if after counting those 422 ballots, he ends up with 50%+1 votes, he avoids a runoff and is re-elected; if his lead drops below 50%, he'll face a June runoff with second place finisher (33.5%) Wesley Turnbow. Meanwhile, Council incumbent Dee Andrews (who ran a write-in campaign for a third term) is currently 65 votes away from topping 50%+1...with 296 ballots -- 83 vote-by-mail plus 212 provisional -- remaining to be counted. The City Clerk's office indicates it plans to canvass the vote-by-mail ballots in the next two days and do another scan (vote count) on Friday (April 15.) STAY with LBREPORT.com for complete coverage of these races until they're conclusively decided.
