We reiterate that JetBlue contribution was to indie committee supporting him; Turnbow campaign notes it wasn't to Turnbow's candidate campaign

(April 7, 2016) -- The policy coordinator for 8th district City Council candidate Wesley Turnbow's campaign has emailed us a response after our second quoted reference to Mr. Turnbow's statement (made during a March 9, 2016 candidate forum sponsored by the Los Cerritos Neighborhood Association) related to "managing" the Airport ordinance.

We noted in our reports that candidate Turnbow said he opposes international flights but said the key was "managing" the noise ordinance...and cited the interests of some Airport tenants. "JetBlue has been a great citizen; you have to work with them...[Cited Aeroplex, general aviation facility] we've got to work with these people...you don't just say 'against, against' and then wonder why the FAA comes knocking on your door one day...I've spent my life on boards and working these kind of deals."

In our April 4 story we said: "Mr. Turnbow left unclear what he meant by 'managing' the ordinance or working 'deals' with Airport tenants."

This afternoon (April 7), Robert Norwood, Policy Coordinator, Wesley Turnbow for City Council 2016, emailed us as follows:

Turnbow's position is clear and is shared by many 8th District residents. He understands the importance of maximizing the positive influence that the Long Beach Airport has on the city's air travel and tourism economies, is committed to protecting the city's noise ordinance and opposes international flights and a Federal Inspection Service (FIS) facility for LGB.

However, failure to communicate conditions of the noise ordinance as well as what effects noncompliance may have, some of which are addressed in the article, on protecting the noise ordinance does a disservice to the community. Residents have no problem understanding the concept of "managing" the noise ordinance. Long Beach officials also acknowledge to importance of this concept as well.

In recent months, Long Beach officials opened additional flights after determining that the city's noise ordinance required the city to allow airlines to increase the amount of business they do at LGB.

Listening to 8th District residents and formulating strategies to address their concerns are hallmarks of the Wesley Turnbow for City Council 2016 campaign. As 8th District councilmember, he will continue this approach and apply the same care in addressing the city's upcoming challenges as he has in forming and communicating his position on Long Beach Airport issues and his opposition to international flights Federal Inspection Service (FIS) facility for LGB.

Our story stated in its first paragraph that JetBlue's contribution was to an independent expenditure committee seeking to elect Mr. Turnbow, not controlled by Mr. Turnbow but independently supporting his election in the 8th district race. Our story also stated later in its text that "Independent expenditure committees can't legally coordinate or having contacts with candidates or their campaigns; they are required to function as separate entities legally and operationally."

Policy director Norwood notes that Mr. Turnbow's candidate campaign (Wesley Turnbow for City Council 2016 [FPPC #1381982]) has not received a contribution JetBlue PAC and neither JetBlue nor Jetblue PAC has pledged support for the Turnbow campaign.
