(April 17, 2018) -- Councilwoman Stacy Mungo announced via Twitter that she has pulled her item (co-agendized with Councilwoman Price) OFF tonight's (April 17) agenda that would have required a Council majority to vote to support the "Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018," a petition initiated measure currently gathering signatures (deadline: July 3 to revise portions of AB 109 (Sac'to enacted state prison "realignment"), Proposition 47 (voter enacted Nov. 2014, reduced certain felonies to misdemeanors) and Prop 57 (voter enacted Nov. 2016, greater opportunities for parole.) In an April 16 evening Tweet, Councilwoman Mungo -- one of two Council incumbents who failed to receive a majority of votes seeking re-election in the April 2018 election (roughly 48%) and now facing a June runoff against Rich Dines -- wrote: "Thank you to all who have reached out to our office on the Safe Communities agenda item - I am pulling the item from tomorrow's agenda to allow for more time to meet with individuals who want to be heard."

Opponents of the Mungo/Price agendized item (reported in detail by LBREPORT.com here) gloated and declared victory. James Suazo (Associate Director "Building Healthy Communities Long Beach) issued a release stating that Mungo "is pulling the agenda item to support the prison expansion proposal. This is a direct result of the community pressure from systems-impacted individuals and Long Beach residents who made it loud and clear that this agenda item is inconsistent with our Long Beach values." The group added that it plans to continue to plans to hold a press conference outside City Hall at 4:30 p.m...but now to "to celebrate this important victory and show elected officials that the Long Beach community stands for smart justice and second chances."

The item's co-agendizer, Suzie Price, was safely re-elected on April 10 with roughly 78% of the vote. Passage of the Mungo/Price agenda item would have required five supportive Council votes. Councilwoman Jeannine Pearce (currently facing a signature gathering effort to recall her) had signaled her opposition to the Mungo/Price item. Mungo and Price had agendized the item by submitting paperwork to the City Clerk on or before noon April 9 for action on April 17.
