Lakewood Village Home Is Burglarized...But Savvy Resident Installed High-Tech Surveillance Cam That Captured Suspects' Images; See VIDEO On Demand...And If You Recognize The Suspects, Call LBPD

(April 25, 2018) -- A resident of LB's Lakewood Village neighborhood became a LB crime statistic last week when their home was burglarized on Thursday afternoon April 19. However the savvy resident had installed a high tech door-bell that includes a built-in surveillance camera and recording device...and it recorded the suspects' images on video...which LBPD has now released for on-demand access below...and seeks the public's help in identifying the suspects.

In a release, LBPD says it responded at about 4:25 p.m. on April 19 to a home in the 4700 block of Graywood Ave. regarding a reported residential burglary; the resident told officers that unknown person(s) had burglarized the residence; the suspect(s) forced entry into the home through a back door...and the resident's loss included jewelry, electronics, clothing and currency.

The homeowner's high-tech door-bell with built-in surveillance camera and microphone captured video footage of three suspects below:

LBPD describes the suspects as follows:

  • Suspect #1 -- Male Black, White Nike Hoodie, Brown and Gold Checkered Cap, Light Colored Shorts

  • Suspect #2 – Male Black, Black Nike Sweatshirt, Blue Jeans

  • Suspect #3 – Male Black, White Sweatshirt, black Shorts, Blue Nike Backpack

LBPD asks anyone with information regarding the burglary to contact LBPD Burglary Detective Daniel Martinez at (562) 570-7351. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), downloading the “P3 Tips” app to your smart phone (available at the Apple App store and Google Play), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.

[Editor's note: In this case, and in an increasing number of other crimes, questions have arisen over whether media outlets should immediately report surveillance cam images captured by crime victims or wait until police do so. LBPD has previously indicated that in some cases, suspects are familiar with social-media and when they learn they've been recorded, they disappear from the area, making it harder for LBPD to apprehend them. LBPD routinely urges crime victims to first contact LBPD and share information and video with them, but as a practical matter, evolving technology is driving events.

VIDEO of these suspects swiftly appeared on at least one social network and was also distributed by the company that manufacturers the high-tech door bell surveillance cam, emailed to neighborhood residents who signed up to receive notifications from the company regarding area burglaries. In this case, LBREPORT.com chose to withhold publishing the video until LBPD released it in seeking the public's help in identifying the suspects. However, with rapidly evolving technology effectively driving events, we may revisit our current practice in the future.]
