(April 1, 2018, 6:05 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that Fifth district City Councilwoman Stacy Mungo. currently in a heated re-election battle for a second term against two current challengers (Rich Dines and Corliss Lee), emailed a member of the governing board of the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association (LVNA), voicing the hope that the grassroots non-profit group's board will remove its president, Bruce DeMille, from the board. Days earlier, Mr. DeMille publicly announced that he sought to remove his name as a supporter/endorser from Mungo campaign materials.

[A dispute over listing a candidate's supporters/endorsers isn't unusual in election campaigns, but [updated April 3 text] apart from events described by former Belmont Shore Residents Ass'n President Mike Ruehle below in our comments section [end update] LBREPORT.com is unaware of previous actions by LB elected officials seeking to involve themselves in the operation of a grassroots neighborhood group that may or may not share an elected official's views on policy matters, providing a non-governmental First Amendment protected "check and balance" for the public.]

On March 21, Mr. DeMille issued a statement (reported by LBREPORT.com) indicating that on March 17, he notified Councilwoman Mungo that "my name and my affiliation to LVNA are not to be used in any of her campaign literature." LBREPORT.com reported the incident as a campaign "kerfluffle" and moved on to other things.

But in an email exchange subsequently provided to LBREPORT.com by Mr. DeMille, Councilwoman Mungo pursued the issue via email with at least one other LVNA boardmember. (Mr. DeMille received the email exchange on March 25 from the LVNA boardmember who was a party to the exchange.) On March 22, Councilwoman Mungo emailed the LVNA boardmember [via Mungo's personal, not City Hall, email address]: "Any help on the - shame on Stacy front? Any board member going to say, It was not Stacy's error, it was a change in heart?"

That led the recipient boardmember to reply to Councilwoman Mungo on March 23 suggesting that she "either make a statement apologizing for the misunderstanding (not an admission of guilt) which would be the classy thing to do or let it go. I hope you apreciate [sic] my efforts."

At midmorning March 23, Councilwoman Mungo replied: "I do appreciate your efforts, I don't appreciate that because Bruce was being unreasonable And unwilling to talk that I have to use a third party and continue to be harassed and threatened. I'm hoping the board will follow through and remove him from the board for his continued threats and lack of willingness to work on solutions with the person he has an issue with as you the Board committed would be the case on a go forward basis."

On March 27, Mr. DeMille issued what he called an updated release containing allegations not reported by LBREPORT.com as three LVNA boardmembers, individually contacted by LBREPORT.com, have either disputed or declined to confirm them. (LBREPORT.com also sought a response from Councilwoman Mungo via several channels with no response to date.) LBREPORT.com has learned that Mr. DeMille's allegations stem from a February 25 meeting at which he and three other LVNA boardmembers met with Councilwoman Mungo after meeting with the three other candidates then in the 5th district Council race.
