Sights of 2004 LB Dragon Boat Races
(Aug. 1, 2004) -- We post below some of the sights at the 2004 Chinese Dragon Boat races at LB's Marine stadium.
The July 31-Aug. 1 event was part of the International Sea Festival presented by LB's Dept. of Parks, Recreation & Marine in cooperation with various sponsors.
The photos below are from Sunday, August 1:
Teams assemble and head out from the dock.
The sleek boats feature a fearsome dragon head and a drum for rowing candence.
This team leader wore Viking horns. [!]
Competitors row slowly up the channel to the starting line...
Spectators watch with anticipation from the shore.
Dr. Howard Chen, President and Tournament Director, coordinated events by cell phone.
They're off! Drums beat, oars fly and the boats race toward the finish line.
In this race, the first place finisher was easy to determine...
...but there was a major battle for 2d, 3d and 4th places.
Race staff scrutinized video for the photo finish.
Results are promised on this race, and others, on the event web site at: www.lbdragonboat.com (results page).
Perfect weather. Happy crowds.
