Seven LB Residents Are Delegates Or Alternates to Republican Nat'l Convention in NYC; Randal Hernandez Is Among Three LB GOP Delegates
(August 28, 2004) -- Seven LB residents are among the delegates or alternates to the Republican National Convention, Aug. 30-Sept. 2 in New York City.
Delegates from LB include Randal Hernandez, Appointments Secretary to CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who oversees selection of individuals whom the Governor can appoint to various posts. Four other LB residents (plus one from Signal Hill) are alternate delegates.
As listed on the GOP convention web site, the delegates from the 37th Congressional district are:
- Randal Hernandez, Long Beach (delegate)
- Jessica Ochoa, Long Beach (delegate)
- Isela Ward, Long Beach (delegate)
- Paul Blanco, Long Beach (alternate)
- Tod Burnett, Long Beach (alternate)
- Oni Vitandham, Signal Hill (alternate)
The 37th Congressional district is currently represented by Democrat Juanita Millender-McDonald.
Roughly 20% (including part of ELB and Belmont Shore) is in the 46th Congressional district represented by Republican Dana Rohrabacher. It stretches from HB to PV and includes the Port of LB. Although there are no LB residents among 46th Congressional district delegates (two are from Rancho Palos Verdes, another is from Huntington Beach), two 46th district alternates are LB residents:
- Brian Bennett, Long Beach (alternate)
- Marilyn Palarea, Long Beach (alternate)
(A third 46th district alternate is from Rancho Palos Verdes).
Also headed to NYC as a GOP delegate: L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe (from the 39th Cong. district in the Cerritos area), accompanied by son (and LB resident) Matt Knabe
There are 2,509 delegates and 2,344 alternate delegates to the GOP National Convention, with CA having the largest delegation with 173 delegates and 170 alternates.
"The California Delegation reflects the great diversity of the Golden State and is a testimony to the growing support that President Bush enjoys in California," says Gerald L. Parksky, Chairman, CA Bush-Cheney '04 in a statement on the GOP's convention web site. The statement adds:
By working together, the California Bush campaign, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim, Congressional Leader David Dreier, State Senate Republican Leader Jim Brulte and Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy have nominated this delegation based upon the nation’s first ever open application available via the Internet to anyone interested in participating and an objective evaluation process. The California Republican National Delegation 2004 is truly representative of the breadth of the California Republican Party bringing together volunteers and leadership committed to electing more Republicans this November.
