(August 21, 2005) -- A banner towed by a plane that took off from LB Airport somehow came loose today (Aug. 21) at about 1:00 p.m...and the banner landed on power lines in the backyard of a Los Cerritos area home in the 4100 block of Del Mar Ave. (generally between Los Cerritos Park and Virginia Country Club).
Neighbors reported hearing two loud "bangs" when the weight of the banner pulled down power lines, apparently causing an electrical arc and short.
[This photo and preceding one taken from neighboring home, thank you.]
The adventure drew a response from LBPD, LBFD, Airport Police...and per protocol the FAA will be investigating.
Edison also responded and carefully de-energized the lines. (Note absence of power lines to the left, knocked out by the banner.
No one appeared hurt and there was no visible fire.
