Blue Whales made their first appearance of 2005 in San Pedro Bay waters a few weeks ago. The Big Blue can weigh up to 400,000 pounds, "has a body as long as three school buses, a heart as big as a small car, and a tongue the size of an African elephant," the Aquarium says.
Dovetailing with their arrival, the Aquarium of the Pacific has launched -- Whales: A Journey with Giants -- a new, permanent program centered on the Blue Whale.

Guests to the Aquarium will now experience "a multimedia presentation with lights, sounds, and video imagery centered on a life-size model of the blue whale; a Passport Book and stamping stations; the Whale of Fortune interactive children's program; the hands-on Whale Cart; Blue -- the whale mascot, and new exhibit signage throughout the Aquarium focusing on various whales that inhabit the Pacific Ocean." the Aquarium says.

Southern California has the highest concentration of Blue Whales in the world...but Blue Whales are still considered endangered with only about 2,000 using these waters today.
The Aquarium of the Pacific says its new program aims "to further conservation education on these majestic animals and their ocean habitat."
