News After-Midnight SWAT Activity / Barricaded Suspect In Los Altos (east of Clark b/w Stearns & Atherton); Neighborhood Residents Evacuated, Suspect Taken Into Custody
(Aug. 22, 2008, with updated information) -- A barricaded suspect, believed to be armed, brought a post-midnight LBPD and SWAT response -- including evacuations of residents in the potential line of fire -- in the Los Altos neighborhood east of Clark Ave. between Stearns and Atherton Streets this morning (Aug. 22).
LBPD Public Infomation Officer Sgt. Dina Zapalski says that at about 10:45 p.m., it was dispatched to the 1900 block of Greenbrier Road regarding a domestic dispute; a preliminary investigation indicated that a male subject had allegedly assaulted his wife, was armed and refused to surrender; the wife had exited the residence before officers arrived.
SWAT was activated; surrounding residents were evacuated to Bixby Elementary School and LBPD Hostage Negotiators worked to convince the subject to surrender.
LBReport.com was on-scene shortly after midnight as police fanned out in the neighborhood. Officers (in photo below) were visible along Clark Ave. at Garford Ave., methodically checking to ensure all residences were cleared on Clark and on streets to the east.

Residents were directed to Bixby Elementary School (on Stearns b/w Clark and Bellflower Blvd.) until the situation was resolved. We saw residents walking toward the school in the midnight hour to wait-out the events.

North/south streets in the area were blocked to traffic by police units and police tape.

LBPD says that during lengthy negotiations, the suspect discharged his weapon in the residence which was possibly accidental.
As the suspect stepped out of his residence [about 1:45 a.m.], SWAT deployed less than lethal rounds (rubber projectiles) and the suspect was taken into custody. The suspected sustained a minor injury to his hand, was taken to a hospital and released for booking.
The suspect has been identified as David Borzoni, 58, of LB. He's been booked for assault with a deadly weapon.
