Sec'y of State Says Nick Dibs Has Collected Sufficient Petition Signatures (Again) For Place On Nov. Ballot Against Incumbent Dem Congresswoman Laura Richardson and Repub Challenger Star Parker (R)

(Aug. 27, 2010) -- Nick Dibs, who two years ago collected sufficient petition signatures from 37th Congressional district registered voters to put his name on the November ballot as an independent challenger to Congresswoman Laura Richardson (D, Carson-LB) has done it for a second time.

The CA Secretary of State's office tells LBReport.com that Mr. Dibs, an area teacher, submitted sufficient signatures of 37th dist. voters and his name is on the list of November 2010 certififed candidates alongside Congresswoman Richardson (Dem) and challenger Star Parker (Repub) in the 37th Congressional district (roughly 80% of LB, plus Signal Hill, Compton, Carson and parts of Watts/Willowbrook).

Secretary of State Program Manager Evelyn Medez tells LBReport.com that Mr. Dibs was required to submit at least 8,315 signatures of validly registered 37th district voters...and he submitted 8,831 petition signatures that the Secretary of State determined to be valid.

A spokesperson for the L.A. County Registrar/Recorder's office told LBReport.com this morning (Aug. 27) that its staff is in the process of verifying the information provided to it by the Secretary of State's office.

In June 2010, Cong. Richardson defeated Dem challenger Peter Mathews in a Dem primary for Dem candidates and Dem voters; Ms. Parker was unopposed among Repubs.

Mr. Dibs, who is neither a registered Dem nor Repub, used a procedure enabling one to submit petition signatures from registered voters in the district who indicate they want the person's name on the ballot. In the November general election, Dems, Repubs and independents can vote for any ballot listed candidate (or write-ins).

The 37th Congressional district, drawn by Sacramento Dems in 2001, is heavily Dem registered. (For detailed expandable map, click map image). The 2001-drawn district replaced a former Congressional district repeatedly won by Republican Steve Horn, putting roughly 80% of LB into a Carson-focused district then held by Dem Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald with 20% (mainly SE LB, shoreline areas and the Port) put in a district now held by Repub Dana Rohrabacher. Following Ms. Millender-McDonald's death in 2007, then-Assemblywoman Richardson won the Congressional seat.

In his November 2008 first-time run against Cong. Richardson, Mr. Dibs drew 24.4% of the vote with Richardson reelected with 75.0% of the vote.

LBReport.com first learned of Mr. Dibs' second run against Cong. Richardson when he told us about it at the Aug. 26 monthly meeting of the Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce.

"I think the country is headed in the wrong direction and we really need to do something about it," Mr. Dibs told LBReport.com.
