DeLong Signed Cong. Candidacy Paperwork |
(August 12, 2011) -- On August 1, 3rd dist. Councilman Gary DeLong signed a federal Statement of Candidacy form for the LB-OC (now designated 47th) Congressional district listing his Long Beach office address on E. Anaheim St. with a Principal Campaign Committee ("Friends of Gary DeLong") listing a Rancho Santa Margarita address. DeLong signed the form, which states: "I certify that I have examined this Statement and to the best of my knowledge and believe it is true, correct and complete."
The Committee's Statement of Organization is signed by Committee Treasurer Betty Presley and lists the Rancho Santa Margarita address; it's also dated Aug. 1. Both DeLong filings have an FEC filing stamp indicating receipt in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 4, 2011. On June 16, 2011, State Senator Alan Lowenthal signed a Statement of Candidacy form listing a Los Angeles office address. (The form was filed before the newly drawn Congressional district was numbered, spurring correspondence from the FEC seeking that information ). Lowenthal's Political Committee Statement of Organization was signed by the Committee Treasurer Jane Leiderman likewise listing the Los Angeles address. Both forms are hand-marked as received and filed on July 11, 2011. On June 17 (the day after Sen. Lowenthal signed his Statement of Candidacy paperwork but before it was filed with the FEC), the Capitol Hill publication Roll Call reported Lowenthal's Congressional run and included a statement issued through his campaign consultant. On August 10, in a story headlined, "Two Ready To Try For Congress," Gazettes.com reported that it "appears two Long Beach City Council veterans will be running for the [Congressional] seat," quoting DeLong as saying "I’ve formed a committee, and I’m off and running...I expect any modification (of the boundaries) to be minimal. There may be some twists and turns down the road, but I believe the district will remain substantially what it is today." The Gazettes.com story said Delong's "probable" opponent was Lowenthal. On August 10, using data on the FEC website, LBReport.com reported that both candidates had in fact already signed and filed Congressional candidacy paperwork days earlier (in Lowenthal's case, weeks earlier) snd are (and have been for some time) LB/OC area Congressional candidates. If ultimately adopted by the Citizens Redistricting Commission on August 15 and not changed further by possible litigation, most of Long Beach (including Port of LB) will be in a new Congressional district that extends into Orange County (Rossmoor/Westminster toward Garden Grove). Commission data indicate that the district is comprised of a citizen voting adult population that is roughly 19% Asian, 0.2% Latino and 0.09% Black. Further to follow on LBReport.com.
