ELB (Lakewood Village) Coyote Attack (Cat Is Killed); Bixby Park Menacing Coyote Encounter (Owner Walking Dog, Coyote Scared Off)

(Aug. 28, 2014) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that a coyote attacked and killed a cat in the 4300 block of Faculty Ave. at about dawn today (Aug. 28). A resident spotted the coyote attacking the cat at about 6:20 a.m. and the resident sought to thwart the attack by yelling and waving his arms at the coyote.

The coyote abandoned its attack...but the cat didn't survive.

The Lakewood Village coyote may or may not be a different animal than a coyote spotted closer to the shore the Bixby Park-to-Belmont Heights area over the past few months...and most recently exactly two weeks ago.

On Aug. 14 in the area of 1st St./Cherry Ave., LB Animal Care Services received a report from an individual walking their dog at about 10:00 p.m. and noticed a coyote looking at the eight pound dog and walking very rapidly toward them. Teenagers at nearby Bixby Park also noticed the coyote, began howling at the coyote and scared it off.

The latter coyote may be the same animal observed May 6 in the area of 1st St./Coronado Ave. (one block west of Redondo Ave.), sizing up a dog taking a walk with a woman -- as if the coyote and/or the dog were about to fight -- as the woman and her dog were taking a walk.

On March 25, readers also reported on Facebook seeing a coyote in the Belmont Heights area. One resident described a "huge coyote...running down the alley behind Argonne Ave between 3rd and Vista" and another saying a coyote was seen in the area of Termino Ave./4th St. next to an elementary school. The Facebook photo below was taken on March 24, approx. 7:45-8:00 a.m., roughly in the area of 3rd St./Granada Ave. [about 2.4 miles northeast]

LBREPORT.com separately received another call in March from a resident in the Belmont Heights area independently corroborating a coyote sighting

Long Beach Animal Control Services (ACS) Manager Ted Stevens has said that coyotes can run at up to 40 mph and are quite intelligent. They learn from human behavior and shouldn't be allowed to become comfortable around people. He said people can make them feel unwelcome by throwing things, squirting them with a water hose when available or a super-soaker bottle filled with ammonia or vinegar. "If hazed enough they won't want to come around," Mr. Stevens said.
