(Aug. 25, 2014, 12:45 p.m.) -- Port of Long Beach officials indicated on Monday morning (Aug. 25) that a Saturday morning (Aug 23) demonstration against Israel didn't halt the unloading of an Israeli ZIM cargo ship by International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) workers at the Port of Long Beach.

Port of Long Beach spokesman Lee Peterson told LBREPORT.com on Monday morning (Aug. 25) that the ship was able to complete all its loading and unloading at the Pier A wharf. The ILWU workers worked as normal and the ship departed early on Sunday morning (Aug. 24) on schedule, Mr. Peterson said.

Mr. Peterson said LB Port police estimated the morning crowd at roughly 100 and an afternoon crowd of about 25.

A mass email urging attendance at the event says the "LA protest called by BDS-LA [BDS = Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions] for Justice in Palestine, American Muslims for Palestine, US Palestinian Community Network, International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network -- Labor, Global Women's Strike, Jewish Voice for Peace-Los Angeles, Al-Awda (The Palestine Right to Return Coalition) and ANSWER."

On Monday morning (Aug. 25), state Senator Ted Lieu (D, southbay) issued a release commending ILWU for unloading Israeli-flagged cargo vessel

[Lieu release text] As the state senator who represents the communities around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, I commend the hardworking Southern California members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union for their dedication and professionalism in unloading cargo from the vessel Zim Haifa. I also commend Rep. Janice Hahn for working with ILWU, the Israeli General Consul and others to ensure the cargo was unloaded. I strongly oppose the BDS [boycott, divest, sanctions] movement and find their tactics and rhetoric offensive. The ports are about creating and preserving jobs in Southern California and should not be used to further the offensive actions of the BDS movement...
