A "King Tide" (Higher-Than-Usual-High Tide) Will Arrive Saturday and Sunday Nights, Coinciding With A "Super Moon"

(August 9, 2014) -- There's a "King Tide" (higher than usual high tide) coming Saturday night (Aug. 9) at roughly 8:51 p.m. (7.03 feet) and another one nearly as high coming on Sunday at 9:38 p.m. (6.98 feet)...and they coincide with a "Super Moon" on both nights.

Long Beach had one of these periodic unusual looking but entirely natural "King Tides" on July 12, 2014 when the high tide reached 7,02 feet. It's not a "tsunami": the water gently rises as the tide rises, then gradually recedes.

Mother Nature is delivering tonight's King Tide with a "Super Moon" when the moon looks bigger than usual because it will be at full when the moon is closest in its elliptical Earth orbit.

King Tides occur roughly twice a year when the Earth, Moon and Sun line up and maximize the gravitational forces that produce tides. The Jan. 1, 2014 King Tide reached roughly 6.8 feet. A December 2012 King Tide reached roughly 7.33 feet.
