(Aug. 16, 2014, 4:20 p.m.) -- The L.A. County Sheriffs Dept. has issued a release updating our earlier information regarding last night's (Aug. 15) incident at the Lakewood Center Mall:

[LASD text, bracketed material by LBREPORT.com] -- On Friday, August 15, 2014, at approximately 8:00 PM, Lakewood Deputies responded to 500 Lakewood Center Mall, Lakewood, regarding a Domestic Disturbance Call.

While one deputy made initial contact with the female party involved in the incident, the other deputy went in search of the man who was possibly involved. While escorting the man out of the location towards the other deputy, the man [allegedly] unexpectedly turned on the deputy and hit him several times knocking the deputy to the ground and continued his assault with a shod foot.

A bystander in the mall witnessing the assault intervened by pushing the suspect away from the deputy. Assisting deputies arrived, and took the suspect into custody without further incident.

The deputy was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. He is in critical but stable condition.

The suspect, 21-year old Frankie Estrada, was transported to Lakewood Station where he was booked for Attempted Murder on a Peace Officer and is being held in lieu of $1,000,000.00 bail.

The investigation is on-going and there is no further information...

...Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Lakewood Sheriff's Station at (562) 623-3500. (Aug. 16, 2014, 6:05 a.m.) -- As of daybreak Saturday (Aug. 16), a Sheriff's Deputy is in critical condition and a man (adult) is under arrest -- booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer -- after the two became involved in a fight at the Lakewood Center Mall at early evening Friday (Aug. 15.)

Details remain very sketchy. There was no shooting, but at one point last night multiple Sheriff units could be seen blocking off Long Beach streets on a route from the mall to a LB hospital [a technique used to minimize street delays in getting someone to a hospital.]

As of dawn Saturday (Aug. 16) LASD HQ wouldn't say if any weapon was involved and indicated the Deputy was responding to some type of domestic situation (no further details.)

As of roughly 10:45 p.m., LASD Lakewood Station (Lt. Malone) said the Deputy was conscious and speaking; no other person(s) were involved in the fight between the suspect and the deputy; there was no shooting; and the suspect-arrestee was OK (no details.) The incident apparently took place at roughly 8:30 p.m. in or near the Macy's store (early info per Sheriff Sgt. C. Roberts at Lakewood Station.)
