LBPD's release (below) provides new details on the extremely dangerous Aug. 27 encounter in which LBPD officers patroling North Long Beach suddenly found themselves confronting an armed carjacking suspect who allegedly opened fire on them, then fled with assisting officers in pursuit

The release also indicates that after losing sight of the suspect vehicle, assisting detectives located the suspect vehicle in Bellflower; LBPD and LASD set up a containment perimeter...and witnesses in the area helped officers locate the suspect hiding nearby. LBPD arrested the suspect, a 32 year old Norwalk man, and also allegedly found an assault rifle nearby with expended shell casings in the suspect-driven car.

Incredibly, no one was injured in this very dangerous, violent encounter described in LBPD text below.

[LBPD release text] -- On Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at approximately 2:45 P.M., Long Beach Police Officers were on patrol in the area of 63rd Street and Atlantic Avenue when the Automated License Plate Reader System electronically notified them that a vehicle that just passed them was a stolen vehicle. The officers ran the license plate and found the vehicle was wanted for an armed and dangerous felony carjacking out of the City of Buena Park, which occurred earlier that day.

The officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, which immediately fled from them. The officers engaged in a short vehicle pursuit and lost sight of the suspect. While searching the area for the suspect vehicle, the officers entered an alley in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Adams Street [small street just west of Houghton Park] and encountered the suspect vehicle driving towards them head on. As the suspect vehicle drove towards them, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the officers from inside his vehicle through his windshield. One of the officers returned fire at the suspect who was shooting at them from inside his moving car.

The suspect fled north from the shooting scene as the officers broadcast the suspect vehicle description to other officers in the area. An officer responding to the request for assistance saw the suspect vehicle fleeing northbound on Atlantic, and went into pursuit as the suspect drove eastbound onto the 91 Freeway. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway in the area of Cherry Avenue and lost the pursuing officer.

A short time later, detectives from the Long Beach Police Department who were assisting located the suspect vehicle parked in a nursery in the area of Alondra Street and Paramount Blvd in the City of Bellflower. Additional Long Beach officers responded and formed a perimeter around the suspect vehicle with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses in the area helped officers locate the suspect who was hiding nearby. Long Beach officers took the suspect into custody without harm. An assault rifle was recovered near where the suspect was hiding and expended shell casings were found inside the suspect’s car.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Gustavo Dorado Campos of Norwalk, was arrested on charges of attempted murder on two police officers, evading a police officer and illegal possession of an assault weapon. Campos was also booked on charges of armed carjacking and kidnapping for the crimes that occurred earlier in the day in the City of Buena Park. Campos is currently being held at the Long Beach Jail on $1,000,000 bail.

Fortunately no one was injured in this very dangerous and violent act. In addition, detectives learned that the Buena Park Police Department had multiple violent crimes occur in their city earlier in the day with a suspect armed with an assault type weapon. Long Beach Police Department is working closely with the Buena Park Police Department while investigating these crimes...

(Aug. 28, 2014) -- LBREPORT.com has details of an extremely dangerous encounter at midafternoon Wednesday (Aug. 27) in which two LBPD officers patroling North Long Beach suddenly found themselves confronting an armed carjacking suspect who allegedly opened fire on the officers [clarified by subsequent release] in the 6300 block of Atlantic Ave. LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Bradley Johnson tells LBREPORT.com:

At about 2:46 p.m., LBPD officers were patroling the area of 63rd St./Atlantic Ave, ran a vehicle license plate which indicated the vehicle was wanted for a carjacking -- deemed armed-and-dangerous -- that had occurred earlier that day in Buena Park.

The LBPD officers pursued the vehicle...and eventually encountered the vehicle head-on.

The suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds at the officers through the suspect's vehicle windshield...at which point an officer involved shooting occurred [LBREPORT.com conclusion: officers returned fire.]

LBREPORT.com has separately learned [not via official sources] that in an eerie parallel to a fatal shooting in Riverside last week, the two Long Beach officers involved were a relatively new police officer and a Field Training Officer (accompanies new officers.)

Continuing LBPD PIO information: The officers and the suspect weren't injured. The suspect fled the shooting location onto the nearby 91 freeway where officers lost sight of the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle was later located in Bellflower...and a man (adult) located near the vehicle was detained in possible connection with the shooting [not named as a suspect at this point]. LBPD says an assault rifle has also been recovered.
