LBPD's release (below) provides new details on the extremely dangerous Aug. 27 encounter in which LBPD officers patroling North Long Beach suddenly found themselves confronting an armed carjacking suspect who allegedly opened fire on them, then fled with assisting officers in pursuit The release also indicates that after losing sight of the suspect vehicle, assisting detectives located the suspect vehicle in Bellflower; LBPD and LASD set up a containment perimeter...and witnesses in the area helped officers locate the suspect hiding nearby. LBPD arrested the suspect, a 32 year old Norwalk man, and also allegedly found an assault rifle nearby with expended shell casings in the suspect-driven car. Incredibly, no one was injured in this very dangerous, violent encounter described in LBPD text below. [LBPD release text] -- On Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at approximately 2:45 P.M., Long Beach Police Officers were on patrol in the area of 63rd Street and Atlantic Avenue when the Automated License Plate Reader System electronically notified them that a vehicle that just passed them was a stolen vehicle. (Aug. 28, 2014) -- LBREPORT.com has details of an extremely dangerous encounter at midafternoon Wednesday (Aug. 27) in which two LBPD officers patroling North Long Beach suddenly found themselves confronting an armed carjacking suspect who allegedly opened fire on the officers [clarified by subsequent release] At about 2:46 p.m., LBPD officers were patroling the area of 63rd St./Atlantic Ave, ran a vehicle license plate which indicated the vehicle was wanted for a carjacking -- deemed armed-and-dangerous -- that had occurred earlier that day in Buena Park. The LBPD officers pursued the vehicle...and eventually encountered the vehicle head-on. The suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds at the officers through the suspect's vehicle windshield...at which point an officer involved shooting occurred [LBREPORT.com conclusion: officers returned fire.] LBREPORT.com has separately learned [not via official sources] that in an eerie parallel to a fatal shooting in Riverside last week, the two Long Beach officers involved were a relatively new police officer and a Field Training Officer (accompanies new officers.) Continuing LBPD PIO information: The officers and the suspect weren't injured. The suspect fled the shooting location onto the nearby 91 freeway where officers lost sight of the vehicle. The suspect vehicle was later located in Bellflower...and a man (adult) located near the vehicle was detained in possible connection with the shooting [not named as a suspect at this point]. LBPD says an assault rifle has also been recovered.
