Untimely Passing

Long Beach Reacts On Facebook With Shock, Disbelief On Learning Robin Williams Is Dead at 63, Apparently A Suicide; President Obama Issues This Statement

(Aug. 11, 2014) -- Earlier today (Aug. 11), Long Beach residents took to Facebook to express shock and disbelief on learning that Robin Williams, the multi-talented actor, gifted improvisationalist and comedic talent, is dead at age 63, believed to be a suicide. A sample below:

[Scroll down for further]

Diane Ripley: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Nancy Wride: Can't think of any other individual who did more to destigmatize addiction and mental illness than Robin Williams. He was human and real about it, and he illustrated that even a rich and famous person will spend their lifetime treating it like diabetes and the medical condition it is - every day.

Maricela Renteria de Rivera: Very rarely do I have an emotional response to a famous person's death. Robin Williams' passing makes me sad because it is too often the artistic souls, with open hearts, who suffer. Our society compartmentalizes celebrities. He wasn't just an actor or comedian, he was a full person & apparently couldn't reach out for help. Please learn the signs of depression, & if you need help, please seek it. Know that someone cares. I care. Depression is real, painful & happens to both sexes. If you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts, you are not alone. Please call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Regina Lemanowicz: He always had such sadness in his eyes, even when he was laughing. He will be missed terribly.

Carola S. Erb: I've been in disbelief ALL day!!!!!

Gina Thomas Patterson I can't fathom the pain a person has to be in to take their own life, so unbelievable

Brian Mineghino: so sad......so sad....

Alan Tolkoff: Oh no! He'd been battling severe depression.

Fielden Lundy: How sad that such a great comedic talent could be depressed. But then comedy a often masks sadness. What sad news.

Jerry Locke: Not believable. I feel that he was one of the quickest wits ever, improvising in miliseconds. And yes a great actor. Just learned of this before checking in here. One wonders how such talent with the world at his feet can get so low...

Pat Schafer Harper Depression is a real illness, not something that money, fame, or talent can overcome.

Carolina Ronchetta O'Neal A very sad day.

Niki Brown Tennant: Such a unique talent. The world was a better place because of Robin Williams. RIP

Cynthia Greer: Awful -- so sad -- I'm so shocked -- one of my favorites.

Helen Dare So sad!

Kristi Fischer: Nooooo!

Jolene Berglund Macrae WAY too young!

President Barrack Obama put the following statement on the White House blog:

Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien -- but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most -- from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin’s family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.
