(August 8, 2015) -- Horrifying and heroic actions took place on Friday night (Aug. 7) as LBPD officers, dispatched in the 8 p.m. hour to the 3200 block of E. Artesia Blvd. to a reported stabbing in progress, arrived (LBPD says within two minutes) to learn a man had allegedly stabbed multiple victims -- subsequently learned to number six victims (four women plus two men) who include the suspect's wife and her brother -- saw citizens waving the officers down and pointing in the direction of the suspect, whom officers located, encountered and shot.

LBPD says all six victims (who included some with initial critical injuries) are now reported in stable condition.

LBPD recovered a knife (roughly seven inch blade, foot-long from handle base end to blade tip); the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

LBPD's release follows:

On Friday, August 7, 2015, at approximately 8:17 p.m., officers responded to a call of a stabbing in progress of multiple victims in the 3200 bock of E. Artesia Blvd., which resulted in an officer involved shooting.

The preliminary investigation has determined the following:

The first officers arrived to the area within approximately two minutes after being dispatched to the location. Upon their arrival, they learned a male suspect had stabbed multiple victims. Citizens were frantically waving down the officers and pointing in the direction of where the suspect could be located. With the help of these citizens, the officers were able to quickly locate the suspect. The officers encountered the suspect and an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Long Beach Homicide Detectives responded and learned the crime spree started at a multi-unit apartment complex on the north side of the 3200 block of E. Artesia. The suspect stabbed his wife, who is a 29-year-old female, the wife's brother, who is a 25-year-old male, and a neighbor, who is a 24-year-old male. All three victims are residents of Long Beach.

After stabbing the first three victims, the suspect proceeded on foot across Artesia Blvd., and entered a convalescent home on the south side of the street. The suspect stabbed three employees working at the convalescent home. These victims include a 23-year-old female resident of Bell Gardens, a 33-year-old female resident of Los Angeles, and a 24-year-old female resident of Whittier.

Five (5) of the six (6) victims were transported to local hospitals by Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics. The victim who was not transported was treated at the scene for superficial wounds. All of the victims are currently in stable condition.

The suspect has been identified as Derrick Lee Hunt, a 28-year-old resident of Long Beach. The motive for this crime remains unclear. Any previous criminal history of Hunt is not being released.

A knife was recovered from the scene (see photograph above).

The quick and courageous response by the officers, and the assistance of the nearby citizens guiding the officers in the right direction to find the suspect, were instrumental in preventing any potential future victims.
