(Aug. 6, 2016, 10:35 a.m.) -- A dangerous situation was safely defused in North Long Beach overnight and a neighborhood at the south side of Houghton Park saw SWAT activity and some residents were evacuated and streets closed as a precaution after North Division LBPD officers spotted a man (adult) -- who turned out to be armed -- in the park in the 1 a.m. hour (when the park is closed.) LBPD says a fight followed in which the man allegedly struck an officer in the head with a handgun and fled into a nearby residence until SWAT found him and took him into custody.

LBPD Public Information Officer Cynthia Arrona tells LBREPORT.com that at about 1:47 a.m. on Saturday Aug. 6, officers saw a man (adult) in a park (closed at that hour); officers contacted him and at some point a fight ensued in which the suspect [allegedly] struck an officer in the head with a handgun.

PIO Arrona says the armed suspect fled to a nearby residence in the 700 block of Harding Street; the occupants came out but the suspect failed to comply; SWAT was activated about 2:30 a.m.; as a precautionary measure, nearby residents were evacuated while the investigation continued; SWAT conducted a search, found the suspect on the property and took him into custody. He now faces charges of assault on a police officer.

The injured officer sustained what are described as superficial wounds to the face and was treated at the scene by LBFD and the officer wasn't transported to a hospital.

Harding Street re-opened to residents about 7:40 a.m.
