(Aug. 5, 2018, 8:20 a.m.) -- A 2.7 magnitude earthquake epicentered roughly 1.86 miles (3.0 km) SSW of Signal Hill rattled the hilltop community and nearby parts of Long Beach at 3:42 a.m. today (Sunday Aug. 5). The nearest zip codes were Signal Hill 90755 and LB 90813. USGS estimate its depth at 6.6 miles (10.7 km).
USGS rated the intensity as III on its Modified Mercaili Insensity scale, meaning "Felt quite noticeably by persons indoors, especially on upper floors of buildings. Many people do not recognize it as an earthquake. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Vibrations similar to the passing of a truck."
