As of 10:15 a.m., LBREPORT.com is to our knowledge the ONLY LB news outlet that is reporting what you see below. LBREPORT.com also provided LIVE webcast coverage as the high tide arrived along Bayshore Ave. (photos below)
(December 13, 2012, updated 12:25 p.m. from initial 10:25 a.m.) -- Long Beach had its highest tide of the season today -- roughly 7.3 feet -- with a "king tide" at about 8:17 a.m. The periodic natural phenomenon (caused by the Earth, Moon and Sun lining up to create a strong gravitational tide force) as expected caused seawater to cover most of the beach from "Horny Corner" (Bayshore @ 1st St.) to the 2nd St. bridge (and perhaps north) while drain plugs (as planned) prevented street flooding in most of Naples. However, seawalls in the Naples area -- at one point along the Naples Canal and we presume a second point south of the Ravenna Fountain -- leaked and/or seeped water visibly onto walkways next to homes along the canals. The Seawall didn't give way -- notice, we're below the water level -- but we saw water bubbling up and along the walkway in the two areas below. There was no overtopping, but water was percolating up onto some sidewalk areas. LB Public Works staff was already on-scene in the 9 a.m. hour, examining and documenting the conditions.
UPDATE: Photos below via LBREPORT.com reader at 171 and 172 Rivo Alto Canal (in that order, below)
UPDATE Councilman Gary DeLong was at the Naples Canals at about 9:10 a.m. and saw the seawater seeping as well, including at the Ravenna pump station. He indicates that the Colonnade also had a significant amount of water in the street. [end update] Below is the high tide that for a time turned the sandy beach into a lake along Bayshore Ave. between 1st and 2nd Sts.
