UPDATE: LB Police & Firefighter Unions Endorse Carl Kemp in 5th Dist. Council Race

(Dec. 20, 2013, 1:46 p.m.) -- As reported first (again) on LBREPORT.com on Dec. 18, the LB Police Officers Association and LB Firefighters Association PACs (political action committees) today (Dec. 20) publicly endorsed Carl Kemp for the 5th district City Council seat being vacated by term-limited Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske who's running for Mayor.

In a release, the Kemp campaign quotes LBPOA President Steve James as saying, "When it comes to public safety, we trust that Carl will unite both the needs of his community and the needs of the police and firefighters who serve Long Beach residents each and every day." The release quotes LBFFA President Rex Pritchard as saying, "He [Kemp] and I have had many conversations about the ways in which he plans to improve his district, starting with bringing back the engines that have been shut down. He has a clear idea of what he wants to get done and a clear path to achieving the goals he's set out."

In his campaign's release, candidate Kemp says, "I'm honored to be receiving the endorsements of the brave men and women who serve our community as police officers and firefighters. They put their lives on the line each day to keep us safe, and that's not something I take lightly. The safety of the residents in the 5th District is crucial, and it will be a top priority when I'm elected to the City Council. Not only do I want to bring back our shut down fire engines, and put more police officers back on the streets, I also want to make response times faster and decrease the amount of property crimes in the area. I look forward to working with both the LBPOA and the LBFF to make this happen when elected."

The Kemp campaign release says it's also received the endorsements of former Long Beach Police Chiefs Robert Luman and Anthony Batts as well as Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy.

Mr. Kemp, a former City Council legislative aide, became a city management government affairs staffer under then-City Manager Jim Hankla and later for the Port of Long Beach. He went on to found his own private government affairs advocacy firm (a lobbying firm) whose clients included the Long Beach Collective Association (a number of medical marijuana outlets operating under city rules prior to a Council-enacted ban.)

As separately reported by LBREPORT.com, some incumbent Councilmembers -- not including current 5th dist. Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske -- have strongly advocated lifting the ban. The Council recently advanced for discussion a new medical marijuana ordinance...despite the opposition of Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell.

(Dec. 18, 2013, 10:58 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that the political action committees of the Long Beach Firefighters Association and Long Beach Police Officers Association (among LB City Hall's largest public employee collective bargaining units) are preparing to endorse Carl Kemp in the 5th district City Council race.

LBREPORT.com has learned that the endorsement comes after representatives of the two groups jointly interviewed the announced candidates in the 5th district Council race and video recorded their responses (a procedure used by both groups in previous election cycles.)...
