(Feb. 24, 2005) -- Two Cabrillo High students were shot -- one fatally -- at midday today virtually within steps of the WLB Police Station!
LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. David Cannan that the shooting took place so close to the police station (Santa Fe at Parade) that officers heard it and rushed outside to find a horrifying crime scene.
Sgt. Cannan says that at about 1:30 p.m., school let out and a group of students walking away from campus was confronted by a group of non-students, alleged gang members.
Sgt. Cannan says it appears words were exchanged...and a non-student opened fire into the group of students, striking two of them.
The two wounded students were transported to a hospital...where one did not survive.
"We are confident this was a case of gang members firing at the students based on statements made and evidence collected," Sgt. Cannan said.
He said detectives are working with a number of clues and "we are going to be relentless in pursuit of the person(s) who did this."
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call LBPD Homicide at (562) 570-7244.
Counselors and clergy are expected to be on the Cabrillo campus on Friday.
