(February 4, 2005) -- CA's top election official, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, has resigned.

On learning the news, CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement:

"I have this afternoon talked to Kevin Shelley by phone and he has informed me of his decision to resign from the Office of Secretary of State. The Office of Secretary of State is one of the most important in state government, entrusted with protecting the work of our democracy. I will move quickly to fill this constitutional office and ensure that the important duties of the Office of Secretary of State be carried out in a manner that instills public trust and confidence."
