News / Perspective Depth Follow The Money: Who Wants Whom As LB's Next Mayor; We Link To Campaign Contribution Details
(February 1, 2006) -- LBReport.com posts below links to official campaign finance disclosure data filed by the major campaigns for Mayor of LB (along with our perspective).
The information shows who wants whom to be LB's next Mayor [caveat: some contributors give money to multiple campaigns]. Under LB's Prop M, contributions for Mayor in the April 06 election are currently capped at $650...leaving voters to decide what access or influence this may or may not predict in a future administration.
- Friends of Bob Foster: The campaign for Bob Foster, who formerly headed So. Cal Edison, had collected roughly $445,000 by Dec. 31/05, spent about $125,000 and had roughly $320,000 at year's end with further fundraising and larger totals to follow. To our knowledge, such sums are unprecedented at this stage in a LB Mayoral race. Contributions to the Foster campaign totalled roughly $288,000 between July 1-Dec. 31, 2005.
The first release we received from the Foster campaign in July 05 made money an issue, announcing $155,000+ in campaign contributions between Jan-June 05 [which to our knowledge was before Mr. Foster said in any publicly accessible venue we could attend what he'd do on major LB issues]. The Foster campaign includes some familiar LB names, but in our view they are eclipsed by a tsunami of corporate, development, energy and other interests outside LB. "This report shows the breadth and depth of Foster's support" said the Foster campaign's chief strategist, Parke Skelton, in a diplomatically-worded release. We link below to the full July-Dec 05 list so you can decide. Friends of Bob Foster monetary contributions July 1-Dec. 31/05, click here.
- Friends of Frank Colonna 2006: Frank Colonna's campaign collected $150,000+ through Dec. 31, which includes $25,000 loaned to the campaign by Councilman Colonna personally. At year's end, after deducting expenses, the Colonna campaign had about $105,000 cash on hand.
In a release last week, the Colonna campaign said its total collected through much of January had reached $190,000...and the campaign says that with a January 31 fundraiser it expects to have raised in the neighborhood of $200,000.
Without mentioning the Foster campaign's contribution sources directly, Councilman Colonna told LBReport.com: "I'm proud of our campaign's support from Long Beach residents. I've lived in this city for over fifty years and believe me, Long Beach is not for sale." He added, "We're going to have sufficient resources to run a positive campaign about the issues. We'll have what it takes to get our message out." Friends of Frank Colonna 2006 monetary contributions, Jan 1-Dec. 31/05, click here.
- Drummond for Mayor: The Drummond for Mayor campaign raised nearly $65,000 through Dec. 31 with donations of roughly $30,000 in the last six months of 2005. After paying expenses, and acknowledging about $8,800 in unpaid bills, the campaign closed the year with roughly $8,200 in the bank. A campaign spokesperson notes that a fundraising mailer after January 1 is expected to bring in additional contributions.
The Drummond campaign hasn't commented specifically on the most recent campaign filings but the retired Councilman (1990-98) frequently reminds audiences that he was first elected to the 3d district Council seat after being significantly outspent.
