First on LBReport.com LB Police Officers Union Plans To Spend $280,000 In Coming Months To Back Half-Cent LB Sales Tax Increase + Elect POA-Endorsed Mayoral + Council Candidates + Deal With State Political Matters; Officers Vote $200/Officer Assessment To Raise $180,000
(February 11, 2006) -- LBReport.com has learned that Long Beach Police Officers Association (LBPOA) leadership foresees spending $280,000 (and possibly more) in the coming months on multiple political fronts...with the lion's share ($230,000) in LB.
In a written hand-out distributed at a meeting of LBPOA members, union leadership indicated it foresees spending the following [text in quotes from the handout]:
- $100,000 in support of a City Hall-desired half-cent sales tax increase ("$18 million dollars to our department allowing us to add approx. 150 sworn and 20 non-sworn. This number [POA spending] may need to be higher to be effective.")
- $50,000 in the LB Mayor's race ("This Mayor appoints all commission members, including civil service and CPCC [Citizen Police Complaint Comm'n]")
- $40,000 in a LB Council race ("This would reflect the amount needed to unseat an incumbent.")
- $20,000 in a LB Council race ("This would reflect the amount needed to have an impact in an open seat.")
- $10,000 in a LB Council race ("This would allow two pieces of mail.")
- $5,000 in a LB Council race ("This would allow one piece of mail.")
- $5,000 in a LB Council race ("This would allow one piece of mail.")
- $500 for John Stolpe [LB Mayoral candidate and LBPOA member]
- $50,000 on state matters ($25,000 for pension protection ("This number may need to be higher") and $25,000 for miscellaneous)
The above-spending total is $280,500...and LBPOA leadership proposed, and LB officers voted to approve, levying a $200/officer assessment ($20/mo for 10 months) by which the union's 900 members would produce $180,000 to augment POA's current political warchest (and still leave a healthy balance after the spending).
The Feb. 8 LBPOA meeting on this political topic was scheduled well prior to the Feb. 7 resignation of 2d district Councilman Dan Baker. Baker's exit creates an open Council seat with a winner-take-all election (if the Council opts for an election instead of appointing someone).
LBReport.com is told that roughly [very roughly] 200 officers attended the meeting and about 150 supported the political assessment.
