(Feb. 1, 2008) -- LBReport.com has learned that LB Animal Control is investigating a horrific incident in which a pit bull(s) attacked and fatally wounded a chihuahua on LB's "dog zone" beach near the Belmont Plaza pool on Jan. 30.

News of the attack was first reported Jan. 31 by NBC4 (KNBC-TV).

LBReport.com is the first LB news outlet to report the attack.

The chihuahua's owner and a good Samaritan tried to stop the attack, which was partly captured in video/audio form by the chihuahua's owner (who brought her camera to record a pleasant day at beach).

Instead, the camera recorded (in sounds more than sights) the horrifying event, desperate efforts by the chihuahua owner and a Good Samaritan to stop it, and the aftermath. The chihuahua's owner says her wounded dog bled to death while being rushed to the vet.

It is excruciating to hear and to watch. It will be disturbing to many readers...but it conveys what occurred in ways that words don't.

LB Animal Control Lt. Michelle Quigley told LBReport.com that her agency would like to speak with the owner of the pitbull dogs as part of its investigation into what took place.

Lt. Quigley said she hopes that the person who owns the pitbulls (or anyone who witnessed what took place or may know about the events) will come forward. Lt. Quigley's direct line is (562) 570-3066.

In a note accompanying the YouTube.com video, the owner of the chihuahua says the pitbulls' owner was a strawberry blond (red hair) Caucasian woman who appeared to be in her 20s or 30s.
