[italic font in orginal] On Saturday, Feb. 7, about a dozen homes in the West Long Beach area sustained water damage due to heavy runoff from neighboring streets when an early-morning downpour overwhelmed local storm drains and blocked a Southern California Edison (SCE) drainpipe.
It has now been determined through an SCE preliminary investigation that the drainpipe on the utility’s property became blocked during this storm, and may have been a contributing factor to water damage on properties in the 2300 block of West Arlington Street.
SCE issued the following statement.
ROSEMEAD, Calif., Feb. 12, 2009 -- Southern California Edison (SCE) has completed a preliminary investigation and has determined that a blocked drainpipe may have been a contributing factor to the flooding of homes on West Arlington Street in the city of Long Beach last Saturday.
As a result of this investigation, SCE has assigned company personnel to work with all affected customers to determine impacts to their properties, assess damages and losses. SCE is committed to working with each customer to ensure this situation is resolved.
SCE will continue to work collaboratively with the city of Long Beach to identify corrective measures and mitigation steps to avoid flooding conditions from SCE properties or facilities in the future.
On Feb. 10, residents of the area testified at the City Council meeting that their area has experienced as many as seven incidents of serious flooding in the past roughly 22 years...with some paliative measures taken and plans for a possible detention basin...but no conclusive fix implemented by City Hall or SCE.
At the Council meeting, Mayor Foster publicly vowed to determine the cause of the most recent flooding...and to fix it.
