  • (Feb. 5, 2010, updated) -- Police activity and traffic diversions visible last night (Feb. 4) on 7th St./Bellflower Blvd in the CSULB/VA hospital area were related to a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and two vehicles.

[update] LBPD says in a release that at about 9:30 p.m., LB police officers responded to an injury traffic collision on 7th Street and Campus Drive involving two vehicles and a pedestrian, which resulted in the death of the female pedestrian.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Honda Civic, driven by a 25-year-old male from Long Beach, was traveling eastbound on 7th Street. The driver of the Civic suddenly saw the victim in the eastbound #2 lane attempting to cross 7th Street mid-block between West Campus Drive and East Campus Drive. The driver attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid striking the pedestian.

Seconds after the initial collision, a 2000 Ford Ranger, driven by a 39-year-old male from Mission Viejo, was also traveling eastbound 7th Street and was unable to avoid the collision and struck the rear-end of the Civic. The momentum of the second collison caused the Civic to strike the victim, who was laying in the roadway, a second time. The victim sustained major trauma to to her head and body and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics.

Due to the victim attempting to cross the roadway outside of a crosswalk, neither driver will be facing any charges at this time.

Until the victim's family can be notified, she is only being identified as a 47-year-old resident of Westminster.

Anyone who may have information regarding this collision is asked to contact Long Beach Police Accident Investigation Detective Brian Watt at (562) 570-7355.
