(Feb. 27, 2012) -- The L.A. County Coroner's office told LBReport.com this morning (Feb. 27) that it has determined that the cause of death of Joanna Ramos following a Feb. 24 after-school, off-campus fight outside LB's Willard Elementary School [1055 Freeman Ave.] was blunt force trauma and the mode of death was a homicide [i.e. the death of a person by the action of another; not a natural death, not a suicide].
L.A. County Coroner Lt. Fred Corral told LBReport.com that police were present during the examination. As previously reported by LBReport.com, at a Feb. 25 news conference LBPD indicated that its investigation is continuing but believes Ms. Ramos (age 10, about to turn 11), and another 11 year old girl at the school, went to a nearby alley for a pre-planned Friday afternoon (Feb. 24) fight that police believe lasted less than a minute, didn't involve any weapons in which no one was knocked to the ground. Following the fight, Ms. Ramos' family brought her, unconscious and not breathing, to a local hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, was placed in ICU in critical condition...and was pronounced deceased a few hours later. LBPD said on the evening of Feb. 25 that it was continuing to conduct interviews and gather facts would present its findings to the L.A. County District Attorney's office, along with the Coroner's office...adding that the DA's office will review the case and ultimately determine if any charges will be filed. At this point, no arrests have been made in this case. Detectives have spoken with family members and friends of both girls, and no one has alleged or provided any information that the decedent was being bullied. None of the students interviewed thus far have informed detectives that school officials were made aware of the impending fight. The Long Beach Police Department’s Homicide Detail will continue investigating the incident to determine if a crime occurred. Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation,
