(Feb. 20, 2014, updated Feb. 21) -- The Antonov AN-124 cargo plane took off about 11:30 a.m. Friday from LB Airport. An observer described its takeoff as similar to a C-17, developing lots of power and making a slow and smooth ascent. The tower (FAA) assigned the giant cargo plane a take-off on runway 12 (heading toward Los Altos/CSULB pyramid.) That departure path is used to match prevailing winds (if they're out of the southeast) but unofficial sources [not from LGB] have indicated that authorities try to avoid having an unusually heavy aircraft travel over the Lakewood Blvd. runway bridge if possible.
UPDATE; LB Airport spokesperson Kerry Gerot tells LBREPORT.com that the Antonov AN-124 cargo plane will take off Friday at about 11 a.m. Time is still approximate. A planned depature on Thursday was put off due to a weather related delay. (Feb. 19, 2014, 10:20 p.m., updated Feb. 20 ) -- Two big planes spotted flying into and out of LB Airport in recent days were Antonov AN-124 cargo aircraft. LB Airport says there were TWO Antonov's at LGB in recent days. A Volga-Dnepr AN-124 carried and off-loaded three Airbus helicopters for reassembly in Long Beach that will fly to the Anaheim Convention Center for display at the Helicopter Ass'n Int'l (HAI) Heli-expo. A Polet Airlines (Russian cargo company) AN-124 brought in a payload for Sea-Launch. One of the Antonov AN 124's has departed...and one is due to take off from Long Beach Airport on Thursday morning Feb. 20. Take off-time is roughly -- very roughly we're cautioned -- about 11:00 a.m. It will use LGB's main runway, taking off either over Cal Hts/Bixby Knolls (runway 30) or over Los Altos (in reverse direction designated runway 12) depending on wind conditions, says LB Airport spokesperson Kerry Gerot. The Antonov AN 124, designed in what was formerly the Soviet Union, now Ukraine, is the world's second heaviest operating cargo aircraft.
