(Feb. 23, 2015) -- In a letter today (Feb. 23) to Long Beach Airport management, Airport tenant JetBlue Airways asks that the Airport and the City apply to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, to seek approval to establish a U.S. Customs facility at the City's Airport.
LBREPORT.com webposts the letter in full below. The letter effectively acknowledges that the facility could be used by others now holding Airport flight slots...but is silent about the consequences for the City if other international operators were to seek now-filled slots beyond the terms of the ordinance. [Scroll down for further.] |
To the contrary, JetBlue tells the City that allowing international flights would be a benefit: International flights at LGB operated by JetBlue, or by any other carrier that holds allocated slots, and consistent with the Airport's Noise Ordinance, will greatly enhance the stature of the City of Long Beach, improve international economic opportunities through increased tourism, commerce and conventions and foster greater cultural ties throughout the region.
As explained at a Feb. 17 City Council study session, and stated more clearly by City Prosecutor Doug Haubert in Feb. 19 testimony to LB's Airport Advisory Commission (LBREPORT.com coverage here), the city's Airport ordinance is the only legal protection the City has from unlimited flights at all hours of the day and night on all runways. LBREPORT.com webposts JetBlue's letter in full below. JetBlue provided it to us at our request. City management and Airport management (which obviously had it in their possession) didn't do so.
