(Feb. 6, 2016) -- LBREPORT.com provides extended VIDEO coverage below of an event earlier today (Sat. Feb. 6) attended by Mayor Robert Garcia, 1st dist. Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, LB Community Investment Co. [City entity formerly LB Housing Development Co.] chair John Thomas and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles President/CEO Erin Rank publicizing the non-profit group's construction of a newly built five-bedroom, 2 ¾-bath residence on a lot conveyed by the City to the non-profit group, which enabled a deserving family to buy their first home.
The property is located alongside 14th St. Park. [Pre-event City of LB release text] This location is one of three sites conveyed to Habitat LA by The LBCIC as part of a three-home development, and is the final single-family residence to be completed. The home was constructed using sustainable materials and environmentally friendly building practices, and incorporates energy-efficient appliances. This project demonstrates the shared commitment by the City of Long Beach and Habitat LA to revitalize neighborhoods by removing blight and improving underutilized properties to make communities more safe, attractive, and economically viable. If you think about just homeowners, homeownership is up in the last ten years. In this neighborhood, crime has dramatically decreased over the last ten years and has been trending in the right direction, even with new crime challenges that we face in the city. Investment is dramatically increased. Ten years ago we didn't have a skate park or basketball courts or Seaside Park was still an empty parcel. The new owner, family matriarch Yvette Nelson, told LBREPORT.com that the family was glad to be in Long Beach [and out of South Central Los Angeles.] Habitat for Humanity/LA President/CEO Rank indicated that the non-profit group plans to work with the City of Long Beach to make multiple additional homes available in the Washington Middle School area [the school is in 1400 block of Cedar Ave.] Pres/CEO rank indicated the group has land for 51 new homes and hopes to get land another 50 homes in the Washington neighborhood (total of 101 new homes)...and the group also plans to go house to house and help existing residents repair their homes. LBREPORT.com will have a perspective/opinion piece on the event coming separately. [Scroll down for further.]
